Saltstone Square#
Saltstone Square is the beating heart of Bridgeport’s southern district — a busy, loud, perpetually crowded crossroads where commerce, gossip, and opportunity all converge. From dawn to well past dusk it is rarely quiet, and never entirely safe, but for those looking for work, information, or simply a decent meal, it is the right place to be.
The square is lined with small shops, anchored by an all-faiths shrine at its center, and dominated on three sides by its most prominent establishments. Large caravans tend to marshal along nearby Queensway Avenue rather than the square itself, though caravan guard recruitment still happens here regularly enough.

The Three Public Houses#
The Strangled Goat Tavern#
The Strangled Goat is the unofficial headquarters of Bridgeport’s adventuring community. A quasi-official arrangement allows Guild and noble missions to be posted and negotiated inside rather than on public boards — which keeps a certain kind of traffic moving through its doors at all hours.
It is not the fanciest establishment in the square. It is not the most expensive. What it is, is reliably busy, reliably informative, and staffed by people who have seen enough that very little surprises them anymore. For those new to Bridgeport and looking to find their footing in the adventuring trade, it is the natural first stop.
The Royal Prince Inn#
The most expensive and discreet of the square’s three public houses. Long-term guests tend toward wealthy merchants, visiting diplomats, and others who value quiet and privacy over atmosphere. Its staff are polished and professionally incurious. It is not the sort of place that welcomes loud conversations about recent jobs.
The Dragonline Lodge#
Mid-priced, comfortable, and possessed of what many consider the best kitchen in the square. A reliable choice for those who want something better than a cot without paying Royal Prince prices. Popular with traveling merchants and adventurers who prefer their lodgings unremarkable.
The Militia Post#
A small but visible militia outpost keeps watch over Saltstone Square during peak hours, monitoring the flow of traffic and maintaining a presence that discourages the more obvious forms of trouble. Their attention tends to be practical rather than aggressive — they are interested in keeping the square functional, not in making life difficult for people minding their own business.
The All-Faiths Shrine#
A broad, open shrine at the square’s center, maintained by the city and dedicated to no single deity. Offerings left here are considered general prayers rather than devotions to any specific divine power. It is used by travelers, merchants making deals, and locals who want a quiet moment in a very unquiet place. Most people walk past it without stopping. Most people also glance at it as they pass.
The Adventurer’s Guild Alcove#
The Guild maintains a dedicated alcove within the Strangled Goat — a small but officially sanctioned space where certified mission allocators meet with adventuring parties, review credentials, and assign sanctioned work. It is staffed by Guild personnel rather than Goat staff, though the lines blur in practice.
Uncertified adventurers cannot be assigned sanctioned missions through the alcove, though the staff are generally willing to explain the certification process to those who ask.
The Feel of the Place#
Saltstone Square has the particular energy of a place where many different kinds of people need to occupy the same space at the same time. Merchants negotiate alongside laborers. Adventurers compare notes next to travelers who want nothing to do with adventurers. The militia watches everyone with the practiced patience of people who have learned that most situations resolve themselves if you give them a moment.
It is, by most measures, exactly what it appears to be — a busy city square doing busy city business. And like most places that appear straightforward, it rewards careful attention.
